Living the Values: Tanya Wick

Continuing to demonstrate Tolko’s values during challenging times

BC’s Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, says “be kind, be calm, and be safe”. In times like these, it can be hard to do so. But I have heard amazing stories of resilience, generosity, kindness, and unity. Based on conversations and feedback, here are some of the themes I have been hearing.

  • Heartfelt thanks for the frontline workers who are working tirelessly to keep essential services intact.
  • How diligently people are following the direction of our provincial and federal leaders and how that has created a sense of unity among us.
  • The creative ways that businesses are adapting to continue to operate and keep their employees and customers safe.
  • How diversity of thought is creating some of the best solutions to these new challenges.
  • Stories of upstanders – defending against discrimination and stepping up to help those who are negatively affected.

We are experiencing these same themes at Tolko. I’m impressed by the dedication and innovation of our employees to keep our operations running safely. I have seen how employees have adapted to follow the physical distancing rules and their commitment to keeping themselves and each other safe, physically and emotionally.

Albert Einstein said, “in the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity”. I am inspired by how people are facing this challenge and embracing the ‘new normal’. As each of us faces our own challenges and make decisions about how to tackle them, I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou, a renowned poet, author, and activist: “I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.
