We want you to walk in feeling confident and prepared, knowing we care about your journey and your growth.
Our interview process — what to expect:
The interview stage is a chance for you and Tolko to get to know each other better. During the interview, you will meet with the hiring manager and potential team members. We encourage you to ask questions about the role, the team and our culture. Here’s what you can expect:
Format: Interviews may be held in-person or virtually. For some positions, you will have a virtual interview first and then an in-person interview at one of Tolko's locations.
Duration: Interviews typically last between 1 and 1.5 hours.
Dress code: For any office-based roles, dress in simple business casual wear. For a role at one of our manufacturing sites, the dress code is casual but follow the safety guidelines in the section below.
Question Types: You’ll be asked a mix of behavioral questions (to understand how you solve problems and work with others) and technical/functional questions (to assess your skills and fit for the role).
Assessments: For leadership roles we will conduct a leadership assessment. This helps us better understand your strengths and how you approach work as a leader.
Alcohol & Drug testing: If you’re applying for a safety-sensitive position, alcohol and drug testing will be required as part of the hiring process.
After interviews and assessments, Tolko reviews all feedback and makes a decision. You’ll be kept informed throughout the process, regardless of the outcome. If you have questions at any stage, Tolko’s recruitment team is available to support you.

What do we look for?
At Tolko, talent is essential — but it’s our values that define us. Every hire is a reflection of our commitment to safety, respect, progressiveness, integrity, open communication and profitability. We’re not just building teams — we’re shaping the future of Tolko by bringing in people who live our values and believe in where we’re headed.
Let’s hear directly from our hiring managers:
"A successful candidate will bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm to the role, paired with a genuine desire to improve processes, systems and outcomes. They will be driven by curiosity and a commitment to continuous improvement, always seeking better ways to contribute and collaborate. Equally important, they will embody strong community values — fostering trust, respect and inclusivity in every interaction, and actively contributing to a positive and supportive team culture." — Dwayne Bueckert, Manager, Automation & Controls, Operational Services
"I value candidates who bring more than just technical skills. I want to see strong analytical thinking, clear communication, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. If you understand the business impact behind the numbers — the 'why' and the 'how come' — you’re able to connect financial data to real business decisions. That’s what makes a difference." — Curtis Mattenley, Finance Controller, Finance & Accounting
"When interviewing candidates, I look for a strong emphasis on their specific role as an individual in regard to safety, humility when reflecting on past mistakes and their ability to grow and learn from them, complimented with a strong work ethic, and pride in their accomplishments." — James Malmquist, Maintenance Manager, High Level Division
"In T-Link Inventory Coordination, I look for candidates who are detail-oriented, adaptable and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication, a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to supporting both the team and our customers are essential qualities I value in every hire." — Jenn Carlson, Team Lead, Reload Sales & Inventory Coordination, Sales & Marketing
"It is important to me that the candidate is honest and themselves. I want to see if they have the qualifications and skills required to succeed, but I am also looking to see if they are a good fit for the team and the culture we are building. Be yourself, don't tell me what you think I want to hear, tell me truthfully what you would do or how you would handle a situation." - Brent Szabo, Production Manager, Meadow Lake OSB
"When hiring for my team, I seek candidates who present themselves professionally in both appearance and communication. Those who convey a positive attitude and a genuine smile already have a 30 per cent head start in the selection process." — Collins Ahize, Lead, Infrastructure Operations, Information Technology
"Stand out candidates bring a positive attitude and a selfless focus on team safety, team accomplishments, and team goal setting. Sharing an understanding of the importance of Tolko's Values and knowing your customers and how you can support them is also key." - Dale Jones, Harvesting Superintendent, BC Woodlands
Visits to our Operating sites: Safety expectations
For many roles, especially those at operating divisions (mills), candidates will be invited for a site tour. This allows you to see daily operations, meet the team, and get a feel for the workplace and community. Your recruiter will let you know if a site tour will be part of your interview process, and if travel is required, Tolko will arrange transportation or reimburse mileage.
If you have never been inside a mill before, here’s an idea of what to expect:
- The mill environment is safety-sensitive and fast-paced with lots of moving pieces. Depending on the season, it may be hot or cold. It can also be dusty and noisy.
- There will be a lot of walking and stair climbing. Speak to your recruiter if you require any accommodation or have any questions about your ability to complete the mill tour.
Safety is our most important value. To ensure your safety and the safety of everyone on our site:
- You will be given a short safety orientation before entering any of our manufacturing facilities. Always stay with your hosts and follow their instructions.
- We will provide you with the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that you need, including: a hard hat, gloves, high visibility vest, hearing and eye protection. You must wear all the PPE provided at all times in the mill.
- Please wear comfortable closed toed shoes such as trainers or hiking boots unless you were requested to wear steel-toed boots.
- Do not wear any loose or flowing garments such as dresses or long jackets that could get caught in the machinery. Do not wear hoodies with strings.
