Why Canadian Douglas-Fir?
Columbia and thrives in the Rocky Mountain region, growing up to 60 meters tall and living for 500 years. These ideal growing conditions result in faster growth, finer grain, and fewer defects.
The optimal growing conditions in British Columbia produce superior fibre with a fine grain and small, healthy knots.
Canadian Douglas-fir’s dense, tight grain structure ensures stability and resists significant expansion or contraction due to moisture changes. This impressive species maintains consistent structural integrity across various environments.
The fine grain and superior structure of Canadian Douglas-fir make it less susceptible to warping, twisting, or shrinking compared to other softwood lumber varieties.
Its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio allows it to support significant loads without adding excessive weight, making it ideal for structural applications.
Canadian Douglas-fir can last 50 to 100 years in partially protected outdoor conditions (Use Class 3.1) and 10 to 50 years in unprotected outdoor conditions (Use Class 3.2) without any preservative treatment.
Canadian Douglas-fir dries easily and remains dry, making it highly resistant to decay in moist environments and a durable choice worldwide.
It retains its structural integrity across various climates, and its natural durability is perfect for outdoor applications like construction and decking, especially in areas with frequent moisture exposure.
Species Comparison
Canadian Douglas-fir is an excellent alternative to Siberian Larch, offering better decay resistance and a more reliable supply chain. It matches the performance and appearance of Siberian Larch and impresses European customers with its quality and durability. While European Douglas-fir shares some traits with its Canadian species, it doesn’t compare to Canadian Douglas-fir in appearance, stability or longevity.
Decay
Canadian Douglas-fir heartwood shows significant durability in aboveground applications, with minimal decay observed after 10 years in Canadian test sites. The median decay rating from this study was 10, the highest rating, indicating excellent performance.
